10 Safe Spring cleaning tips for cat lovers.

The trees are budding outside the window, and it’s time to give your home that thorough scrubbing you’ve been pledging you’d do ever since you took down the holiday lights. During this phase of the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing creates the perfect opportunity to give the house a little extra love. Your whole family can stay safe, healthy, happy, and clean while helping end a serious threat.

Think twice before you dig out those harsh chemical cleansers, though. Many common household cleaning products are poisonous to pets or have a citrus scent that turns off most cats.

Try these 10 tips to give your home a polished gleam and keep your kitty safe at the same time.

  1. Replace your worn-out rags, brooms, mops and other housecleaning hardware. New products are less likely to contain traces of poisons from your pre-cat days. Besides, isn’t it about time that old string mop got set out for the trash?

  2. Remember that just because the label says “all-natural” doesn’t mean it’s all-safe. Check the ingredient list for anything strongly acidic or alkaline such as ammonia, formaldehyde, chlorine, or glycol ethers.

  3. Clean out the litter box. Modkat makes this chore simple with our easy-to-clean, reusable liner. Since our system restricts the mess from kickers, diggers, litter trackers, and high pee-ers, your cat litter area will be the easiest it’s ever been to clean.

  4. Drop your cat’s bedcover in the washer after you launder your own comforter. Pet bedding collects mites, shed fur, dander and an assortment of nasty allergens. Be sure to use a pet-friendly detergent or white vinegar.

  5. Clean your window screens, and check for sharp bits of broken wire that could injure your cat. You’ll also want to make sure the screens fit tightly in their frames, so curious kitty can’t get out or get injured.

  6. Try using fabric softener sheets to clean your baseboards because they can repel pet hair.

  7. Run water and food bowls through the dishwasher. It’s easy and great for killing bacteria. We recommend using stainless steel bowls since they’re dishwasher-safe. If you wash by hand, use a mild detergent and hot water. Rinse thoroughly to make sure there is no soap residue left behind when you refill the bowls since that could upset your pet’s stomach. If you’re feeding your cat wet food, be sure to clean that dish every day.

  8. When you dust your books, collectibles, or your roommate’s prize collection of vintage vinyl, remember to take care of your pet’s toys, too. Wash the dirty stuff, replace the broken bits that could harm your cat, and freshen up the catnip.

  9. Avoid corrosive cleaners. That means most toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, drain cleaners, and lye. Choose a vinegar, lemon juice, or baking soda based product as a replacement. You can even make your own, and that means a pat on the back for being safe and environmentally conscious.

  10. Pregnant women should not clean the cat’s litter box due to the risk of toxoplasmosis.
